| ChoicePoint Curtails Business, Changes Methods to Protect Data Wall Street Journal (06/24/05) P. A10 ChoicePoint Inc. is sharply curtailing one line of business and making significant changes in the way it shares much of its electronic data, in an effort to avoid incidents like the data breach disclosed earlier this year in which criminals obtained personal information on about 145,000 people. The Alpharetta, Ga., data concern will electronically mask sensitive information such as Social Security numbers in its reports, such as background checks provided to companies on new employees. ChoicePoint is also taking steps to severely reduce its business in providing data to private investigators, collection agencies and some small financial concerns. |

The unreadiness team
THE REPORT is chilling. Optimistically titled "U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team Makes Progress in Securing Cyberspace, but Challenges Remain," it paints a disturbing picture of a national security disaster waiting to happen. The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or CERT, established in 2003 to coordinate national cyber-defense efforts, is an arm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) tasked with "analyzing and reducing cyber threats and vulnerabilities, disseminating cyber threat warning information, and coordinating cyber incident response activities." But this vast responsibility has come with little and confusing authority.

Congressional efforts to repeal D.C. gun laws imperil homeland security
CONGRESS LONG ago demonstrated its disdain for the residents of the District of Columbia. So there's little hope that appeals about the rights or even the safety of its 600,000 residents will factor into consideration of the specious effort to rewrite the city's gun laws. What lawmakers might want to think twice about, however, are the homeland security implications of making the nation's capital wide open to guns. Surely currying favor with the gun lobby is not worth that risk, even if this is an election year.

UAE Man-in-the-Middle Attack Against SSL
Interesting: Who are these certificate authorities? At the beginning of Web history, there were only a handful of companies, like Verisign, Equifax, and Thawte, that made near-monopoly profits from being the only providers trusted by Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. But over time, browsers have trusted more and more organizations to verify Web sites. Safari and Firefox now trust more...

Successful Attack Against a Quantum Cryptography System
Clever: Quantum cryptography is often touted as being perfectly secure. It is based on the principle that you cannot make measurements of a quantum system without disturbing it. So, in theory, it is impossible for an eavesdropper to intercept a quantum encryption key without disrupting it in a noticeable way, triggering alarm bells. Vadim Makarov at the Norwegian University of...
